EDITING

Edits That Keep You Sounding Like You

I'm a writer, too, so I get it. You need an editor who coaches and encourages you, who protects your voice while helping you shape it. I provide two types of edits.

A developmental edit is a big-picture edit in which I help you strengthen structure, voice, and themes. I offer suggestions for global revisions but don't make changes to your manuscript myself. You'll get comments in the margin and an editorial letter from me.

A copy edit is the final polish before your manuscript is published. I go through your manuscript with a fine-tooth comb to clean up grammar, spelling, and continuity issues. You'll get a redlined manuscript using Microsoft Word's track-changes function and, if applicable, a style sheet.

MomDentity Nonfiction Book

Alongside launching her new brand as a mom influencer, author Courtney Wise sought a literary agent to get her book MomDentity picked up by a publisher. I provided global suggestions about point of view, pacing, characterization, and tone as well as chapter-specific suggestions to the first five chapters.

The result: The author walked away with an actionable roadmap to crafting a book that would win agents over with her warmth, humor, and storytelling abilities.

Relationship Rx Nonfiction Book

When production editors at Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group (now part of Bloomsbury) approached me about the book Relationship Rx, they asked for help keeping the voice consistent and organizing the content more clearly with headings. I copyedited the manuscript, created a style sheet, and inserted typecodes to prepare the manuscript for typesetting.

The result: By keeping the voice consistent across two authors, I helped shape the book into one that reviewers call "fun and digestible" and "a beautiful blend of head and heart."

Concordia Theological Quarterly Academic Journal

The editorial committee of Concordia Theological Quarterly was in the process of updating its house style to clarify when to deviate from The Chicago Manual of Style. I worked alongside the associate editor and editorial assistant to copyedit articles during a style-guide transition to prepare articles for publication.

The result: By enforcing house style and cleaning up citations, I helped the journal maintain its intellectual voice and historical reputation among a loyal readership.

Medical Residency Program Manual

The neuromusculoskeletal residency program at Beaumont Hospital (now Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital) wanted to standardize and professionalize its program manual. The manual included content from multiple sources, such as policies from the hospital and evaluation charts crafted by physicians. I worked alongside the program director to correct errors and implement a basic design to give the manual a cohesive, professional feel.

The result: I gave the hospital a cleaned-up program manual for immediate use, as well as a style guide that helped the program director make future updates while maintaining consistency and cohesion.
